Ball in Broken Ring Demo

Code: 1D55.10

Demo Title: Cut Ring and Ball

Subject: Centrifugal Escape

Description:
Circular motion is demonstrated using a ring and ball. The ring has a removable piece which allows the ball to escape, demonstrating what happens when the force that the ring applies to the ball is no longer applied.

Procedure:

  • Begin by speaking about circular motion and force
  • Begin the demo by pushing the ball so it rotates around the closed ring.
  • Direct the audience's attention to the numbered flags and the overhead display to see the demo from above.
  • Repeat the first action for the overhead view so the ball rotates around the closed ring.
  • Remove the portion of the ring which is yellow and repeat.
  • The ball is released as predicted during the initial discussion about the flag placement.
