3D40.60 - Chladni Plates

Code: 3D40.60

Demo Title: Chladni Plates

Subject: Resonance in Plates, Bars, Solids

Description:
Chladni plates coupled to a wave driver showcase different resonances by the patterns made by sand on plates at resonant frequencies.

Procedure:

1. Turn on function generator. Check that sine wave is the selected waveform. Change frequency to 10 Hz. Maintain amplitude of 1.0 V to 1.5 V. 2. Unlock wave driver so the Chladni plate vibrates. Listen carefully for the loudest sound as you tune the frequency increasing in small steps on 1-5 Hz. 3. Now pour sand evenly and watch sand particles arrange themselves along nodes and antinodes. 4. Monitor various different resonant frequencies till 800 Hz. Precautions: 1. Do not increase voltage of wave beyond 2.0 V. 2. Unlock wave driver when Chladni plate vibrations are to be observed. 3. Lock wave driver when changing Chladni plate. 4. Start at very low frequency of 10Hz and increase gradually to a few 100 Hz.
