Subject: Stellar Evolution


Description:
Cooling a helium filled balloon with LN2 demonstrates gas behavior when cooled and when we warmed.


Procedure:

  • Roll helium balloon in liquid nitrogen and have the students note that the balloon gets smaller and smaller
  • Then, take the balloon out of the liquid nitrogen and put it on the table
  • Note that the balloon will immediately re-expand after taken out of the LN2, so try to catch it with the plastic dome before it floats to the ceiling
