Demo Title: Fingering out Buoyancy


Subject: Density and Buoyancy


Description:
A beaker of water and a weight are placed on opposite ends of a balance beam scale. The beam is even until you dip your finger into the water.


Procedure:

  • With the beaker of water on one end and the weights on the other end, note that the beam is balanced.
  • Ask students what happens if you take your finger and dip it into the water.
  • Dip finger in water and note how the scale changes.
  • Even out the scale to see how much force your finger produces when it is dipped in the water.
