8A05.40 - Kepler's Third Law

Kepler's 3rd Law Demo
Kepler's 3rd Law Demo

Code: 8A05.40

Demo Title: Kepler's Third Law

Subject: Historical Astronomy

Description:
Use a model gravity well and two billiard balls to explain why planets further from the sun have longer years than those closer to the sun.

Procedure:

  • Using two balls set the first in motion around the yellow dish.
  • The first is rotating in a large circle, set the second in motion in a tighter rotation around the center.
  • The one on the interior is rotating faster, thus will go through many more orbital periods in the same amount of time as the one on the outside.
