Demo Title: Kepler's Second Law

Subject: Historical Astronomy

Description:
Using a model gravity well and a pool ball we show that as a an object moves away from its gravitational center it slows down, and as it passes near it is moving faster.

Procedure:

  • Set a pool ball in motion around the yellow dish examining the speed of the initial orbit.
  • As the ball gets closet to the center explain how the orbit is getting faster.
  • This represents the planets closer to the sun orbiting faster than those which are further away.
