Description:
Discharging an electrometer with UV


Procedure:

  • 1.Thoroughly rub zinc plate with steel wool
  • 2. Tape the flood light and mercury lamp to the table
  • 3.Negatively charge the electroscope and have students take notice of the leaves repelling
  • 4. Shine the UV light onto the zinc plate of the electroscope and have students take notice how it took away all its charge
  • 5. Shine the white light onto the zinc plate and have students notice if there is any changes in the leaves
  • 6. Discharge the electroscope by grounding.
  • 7. Positively charge it and shine the UV light onto the zinc plate and have students take notice of the leaves
  • 8. Discharge the electroscope and charge it negatively again
  • 9. Put the clear plate of glass on top of the UV light and shine it onto the zinc plate and take note of the reaction of the leaves
