Demo Title: Friction Phone Book


Subject: Shear stress


Description:
Using the phone book with handles - hold up and explain that the phone books are being held together strictly by friction. Nothing is holding the pages together. Take the handles and try to pull the books apart and demonstrate how strong friction is. Place the one handle on the rod attached to table and pull harder .


Procedure:

  • Hold the phone books up showing the audience they are held together by simple friction.
  • Try to pull them apart by hand.
  • Link one end over the rod on the table and try to pull apart again. Explain friction.
