Demo Title: Coriolis Force (Part 1)

Subject: Coriolis Effect

Description:
Demonstration using different objects to explain Coriolis Force on earth. Flags on lazy susan used to explain how objects in different positions will move in different rates. They also have different forces acting on them depending on position. Using another lazy susan and a tennis ball the effect is demonstrated.

Procedure:

  • Using the globe explain Coriolis force.
  • Using table with flags set up, spin the table slowly and explain the flags are moving at different rates due to the distance from the center.
  • Increase the speed of the spin and allow the flags to fall. Explain force is greater than t he friction holding them to the table.
  • Move to the second table and roll the tennis ball across while table is still.
  • Spin plat5form and roll the ball across again noting it deviates to one side.
