1Q50.23 - Bike Wheel Percession

Precession of a Bike Wheel
Precession of a Bike Wheel

Code: 1Q50.23

Demo Title: Bike Wheel Percession

Subject: Gyros

Description:
Using a stool and bike wheel direction of momentum is demonstrated by shifting the bike wheel to the right or left. A large gyroscope is demonstrated using both wheels. And a bike wheel held by a string demonstrates the direction of spin will determine the rotation of the wheel.

Procedure:

  • Sitting on stool hold wheel in front of you and hold the wheel at different angles to demonstrate how it will move you to the right or the left depending.
  • Place wheel on top of stool and use as gyroscope and demonstrate how it will not fall over while spinning.
  • Take 2nd wheel and use as gyroscope again. Use bike wheel to imitate the earth by changing the angle of it's spin.
  • Take the bike when with string attached and spin it.
  • Hold the string and show how the wheel spins in one direction depending on the direction of direction the wheel is spinning.
