Center of Mass of Thrown Objects Demo

Code: 1D40.10

Demo Title: Center of Mass of Thrown Objects

Subject: Motion of the Center of Mass

Description:
Using numerous objects center of mass is found. A large tennis ball, NJ Styrofoam cut-out, beach ball with sand inside, and a coupled system (2 different sized balls connected by a string) are all demonstrated and explained.

Procedure:

  • Begin with the large tennis ball by picking it up tossing it up and down and spinning it while explaining the basic center of mass.
  • Throw the tennis ball across the room in a parabolic path.
  • Move to the NJ cut-out and show the dots on the front.
  • Throw while rotating cut-out through the air in a parabolic path.
  • Take the beach ball with sand inside and repeat the same process.
  • Finally perform the same with the coupled system.
