Demo Title: Center of Mass of an Odd Shape

Subject: Motion of the Center of Mass

Description:
Odd shape is used to demonstrate center of mass. A line is drawn across the shape it hangs in different positions showing the center of mass is at the same point. The point is then shown to be the center of mass by spinning it at the point.

Procedure:

  • Hang the odd shaped cut out from one of the predrilled holes at the edge of the object.
  • Hang the chalk line from the nail straight down the cut-out and make a line
  • Repeat this same step several times, moving the cut-out to a different hanging position using a different pre-drilled hole each time
  • Note how the lines all meet at the same point which is the center of mass.
  • Hang the cut-out from the hole at the point where the lines meet and rotate slowly.
  • Explain center of mass for the audience.
