Demo Title: Bimetallic Strip


Subject: Solid Expansion


Description:
Strips of dissimilar metals bonded together bend when heated.


Procedure:

  • First, put the bimetallic strip over the flame and have the students note how one metal contracts and the other expands
  • Then, submerge the bimetallic strip in LN2 and have the students note how the metal bends the other direction
