Demo Title: Terminal Velocity Coffee Filters


Subject: Viscosity


Description:
Drop a coffee filter and it descends with low terminal velocity. Crumple one and drop it.


Procedure:

  • Explain terminal velocity to audience.
  • Holding both the tennis ball and the coffee filter, drop the tennis ball and explain it falls at constant velocity but never reaches terminal velocity.
  • Next drop the coffee filter and explain how it falls at constant velocity and almost immediately reaches terminal velocity.
  • Stack several filters on top of each other and then repeat, explaining how it reaches terminal velocity still but at a faster rate.
