1J30.10 - Newton's Balance

Code: 1J30.10

Demo Title: Newton's Balance

Subject: Resolution of Forces

Description:
A 3-4-5 triangle holding a block. Add counterweights and remove the incline.

Procedure:

  1. Start with the Table Setup:

Place the 1 kg mass on the flat table. The normal force acts vertically upward and is equal to the weight of the object (about 1000 grams of force).

  2. Move to the Incline:

Place the ramp at a 30-degree angle and place the 1 kg mass on the ramp.

  3. Explain the Forces:
    • Normal Force on the Incline: The normal force now acts perpendicular to the ramp, not vertically. It is around 866 grams of force.
    • Force Down the Incline: A force of 500 grams pulls the object down the ramp.
  4. Test the Balance:

The mass stays in place because the normal force (866 grams) counteracts the downward pull (500 grams), keeping the object balanced.
