Demo Title: Balloon / Apple Cart (Accelerometer)


Subject: Accelerated Reference Frames


Description:
A balloon filled with air is suspended from the top and a helium balloon from the bottom of a clear box mounted on wheels.


Procedure:

  • Explain that the demonstration is demonstrating relativity/relative motion.
  • Explain that you will be pushing the box forward and ask the audience what will happen to the balloon and apple.
  • Push the box forward and review that the balloon moves forward and apple will move backwards.
  • Review the surrounding area/inertia and the density of the balloon.
  • Repeat the process explaining if it were a rocket and there was no way to see out, you would still know you were accelerating because of the motion.
