Angular Momentum - Basketball on Rope Demo

Code: 1Q40.17

Demo Title: Basketball on Rope

Subject: Conservation of Angular Momentum

Description:
Demonstration of angular momentum using a basketball on a rope. By swinging the basketball while siting on a rotating stool demonstrates that you will rotate in the opposite direction of the basketball as it is spun overhead. The longer amount of rope used the faster you will spin.

Procedure:

  • Demonstrate how the stool spins.
  • Take basketball on string and sit on stool.
  • Begin spin basketball overhead and demonstrate how you begin to spin the opposite way.
  • Now use more rope and repeat the last demonstration, this time you'll spin the other direction much faster.
