Code: 1Q40.10

Demo Title: Angular Momentum - Stool and Weights

Subject: Conservation of Angular Momentum

Description:
A person on a rotating stool moves dumbbells out and in. A great way to explore the concept of angular momentum.

Procedure:

  • Introduce moment of inertia.
  • Show how stool spins and explain you'll be using small masses and 10 lb. dumbbells.
  • First take the smaller masses and place one in each hand.
  • Sit on still and spin.
  • With arms out spin and then bring your arms in closer which increases the speed.
  • Repeat the same thing with the larger weights (10 lbs).
  • This shows you are spinning much faster.
  • Explain the reason why you spin faster.
