Demo Title: Irregular Object Center of Mass


Subject: Finding Center of Gravity


Description:
Suspend an irregular object from several points and find the center of mass with a plumb bob.


Procedure:

  • Hang the Chalk reel string at the top nail
  • Hold the bottom of the string tight then pull the center and leave it so it leaves a mark on the shape
  • re-hand the shape on another end of the shape
  • re-do the chalk reel process
  • show the students that no matter what ends we hang it from all lines will cross the same point
  • Remove the holder from the clamp of the rod and insert it in the center of the shape and show the students that the shape doesn't rotate and is at equilibrium
